This strategy is sound. Instead of buying the components, I crafted them with my gathered materials, reducing the amount of “discovery” needed, and then sold what I made on TP. Ultimately there was no cost in gold because although I had to pay the crafting master for some of the required mats, selling what I crafted covered that cost. I ended with the same amount of gold I started with, but considerably less mats. Either way, the end cost is gold or mats. If you intend to master all of the crafting types, a blend of the two methods would probably be best, dependant on how often and how consistantly you gather the mats needed for each level. If you gather alot of silver but only a few platnium, you’ll be buying the platnium based components and crafting the silver based components. Probably should keep in mind that mats can be used by more than one crafting type too.
Agreed, Many times the cost of purchasing items are too much or purchasing components are horrible. In these cases making a few is a great idea. We offer gw2 farming guides for when these things happen as well. Keep in mind this is the most efficient possible guide, It does not mean it is always the cheapest… To make it the cheapest you have to be careful. Over a thousand people a day view this and get the great idea to gouge the market by jacking the prices up on individual components.
So what do you do when prices are high: Follow the 99 Rule. If you read the article about crafting formulas you will see there is a sweet spot where you can build 9 and discover 9 (on average). By controlling the prices w/ a mixture of farming yields the most efficient guide and the most cost effective guide.
All the other guides say it is the cheapest by crafting in bulk 100s of items. Nearly 95% of the time this is more expensive. Logically this is also less optimal because you have hundreds of useless things left over you cant sell an you end up at max crafting level with very few recipes.

You may want to go through this guide again and revise some things. I don’t think that buying all the stuff is actually the cheapest. It literally just cost me 2+ gold to go up 25 levels
Unfortunately the way the market (TP) fluctuates makes the prices natural moving targets. The best way to do this is use this concept as a base and use a bit of real time research. Each section provides an alternative recipe list where you can easily explore what recipes you can discover (if possible) and craft in bulk. By knowing all the recipes, you can just to a quick price check to see if there is something cheaper yet equivalent.
On a side note this brings up a great point; In some cases this guide literally is the cheapest and sometimes it is the most expensive. Think of it as a blueprint or a template of a guide where you find what you need given the best tools possible. Since Arenanet did not implement a interface for us to gather real time data no guide can truly boast ‘cheapest’.
We did the guides this way because it yielded the greatest bonuses possible and requires the least amount of mats. Mathematically it is sound. Actually and theoretically, it follows a basic supply and demand curve of the components used.
You should put a shopping list for each craft that has all the mats required so you can pre buy it all in 1 big go
i cant find the green trident staff or the recipe for the staff anywhere.
The green trident staff should be learned immediately when you get the artificer trade. As an alternative you can purchase these from the TP.
well i made a fresh 2nd artificer and he didnt get the recipe either, maybe they removed it? the tp doesnt have them either unfortunately
doesnt matter much as i only miss a couple recipes now.
It was a typo. It is the green trident shaft. I looked at that several times and I can’t believe I missed that. lol
tx for figuring it out, problem solved
Didn’t cost me as much as 8g for tailoring, but close to 6, possibly 7. However I didn’t really use this method until 120ish so I wasted quite a bit early level buying raw mats and making the inscriptions.
I’m currently stuck at 350 artifice as the inscriptions I need (master) are anywhere between 6-11s each and I need at least 12 to get to the next stage…
I’m probably going to end up asking this on all your amazing guides, but how much does this cost?
FYI It cost me 8 gold to get 400 tailor
